AquaC Remora Protein Skimmer with Maxi-Jet 1200 Pump Review

AquaC Remora Protein Skimmer with Maxi-Jet 1200 Pump
Average Reviews:

I had this for 3.5 weeks on my 100 gallon saltwater and it did not pull anything even though there were lots of tiny bubbles (there's still insufficient bubbles to do anything). It's also very noisy like a dentist's spit cup. The pump inside the tank is also ugly, it should be on the outside of the tank. The cup's lid is really tight that you need two hands to take it off.
UPDATE 8/29/2010: I bought the Reef Octopus BH-2000 (about the same price and it includes a free surface skimmer -- a $30 value that AquaC would have charged you) and after 2 hours, it was pulling junk out of the water into the cup. It makes TONS and TONS of tiny bubbles compared to the AQUAC Remora (looks like 10 times more!). Plus, the pump is outside the tank so it's not heating up the water and it's not taking up space inside the tank and also not ugly. Regarding noise, it's quieter but not silent but I figured out how -- I bought 2 4 feet tall exercise pads and fold each in half lengthwise and placed them on the left and right side of the pump to muffle the sound of the pump. Ahhh.... silence.... The air intake tube does include a muffler which does work but to silence that even more, I attached an additional tube about 8 inches long to the muffler's other nipple and now it's almost silent. The Reef Octopus BH-2000 is definitely 5 stars

Tetra Whisper In-tank Filter 3i Review

Tetra Whisper In-tank Filter 3i
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this specifically because it said it was for 3 gallon or smaller tanks. I wouldn't ever expect this to work for a 5 gallon tank because it specifically says 3 or smaller. BUT I did hope that it would be ok for a 1 gallon flat sided bowl...it's not. I bought this to keep red rosy minnows (feeder fish) in for a week at a time. It has already killed 3 fish by sucking them up against the intake. There is no control over how much/little water is drawn in. I even used foam, from another pump to see if it would help. The fish are still swimming for their lives and any time they stop they get drawn against the foam. There is no way I expected it to be that strong considering what it is.
On the other hand, were it not killing my fish off - it is pretty quiet. There are bubbles behind the filter which makes the top bounce and/or lift up, which another reviewer commented on, but the bubbling is still not obnoxiously loud and you can remove the lid if the clicking gets to you. The motor itself is quiet if it isn't touching anything on the sides, but I am still only giving it two stars because the motor moves around on a counter top and will sometimes move itself up against the wall or bowl and be louder until I move it back. I really wish this had worked better. For a three gallon tank, maybe it would be perfect, for a one gallon tank, it is too strong.

After the most recent demise of my last Betta- Hot Temper, who bless his heart, lived 2 years in a 1 gallon fish bowl, I found myself in a fish store (not so soon after, I did mourn the little guy). Wandering about I could not deny my instant love for a feisty beautiful little guy the size of a small drapery tassel, I brought him home (instant gratification and instant love is my middle name)...and proceeded to give him 'Hot Temper's' life all over again (yes...in a bowl), but this time I thought he might benefit from living at work with me (I work all the time)...fast forward to cute little fish, living on my desk, and between calls me looking up just what might make him happy (er)...I come to a sudden realization that I sucked as a fish mom(formerly) and needed to give the little guy what he truly deserved, more oxygen, more "toys", more room and heat. I bought this little aquarium wonder (w/a black top),bye bye bowl, and wow have I got one happy fish! This tank is an easy set up,the filter (that worried me sick) is great, it will not swallow or eat your Betta (as far as I can tell so far...thank goodness!),he is not struggling through any major currents and as far as I can tell, he is a happy camper (or show off). I purchased a small heater to keep his temp at what is most conducive to his normal habitat, my Betta is making bubbles nests, and showing off like a full finned champ. I always thought I had a happy Betta, until now, this fish is unbelievably active and showy. I know it's a fish, but he sure reminds me of a puppy with fins! I love this little tank, perfect on a desk top, easy to set up, perfect for a Betta (just buy a heater, plants, gravel and hiding nook and you're set!) Love this!!

After the breaking in period I have been able to get this skimmer to produce reasonably dry, dark skimmate. I don't have to adjust it much and it is surprisingly tolerant of small changes in the water level. It is working well for me in the refugium of a 30 gallon setup that I did not need aggressive skimming for. I don't notice too much of a microbubble problem but I don't have this in the main tank anyway. I think most people looking for a small skimmer for a nano system would be pleased with this product. The only downside is that the water inlet is not near the surface to help with surface skimming, but most skimmers overlook this.
I would like to add that although the description says "hang on tank or suction" it should more accurately say hang in tank or suction as it is an internal, submersible type skimmer.

New Aquarium Fish Tank Protein Skimmer Filter W/ Power Head Pump Review

New Aquarium Fish Tank Protein Skimmer Filter W/ Power Head Pump
Average Reviews:

This skimmer will work a little but it will take you awhile to get it right. It is difficult to adjust properly to get it to actually skim and not just fill the collection cup with water. Also it is a "In Tank" skimmer and it takes up a lot of space. I had it running in a 55 gallon tank and it looked terrible. If you are planning on getting a skimmer please, for your and you tanks sake buy the best protein skimmer you can afford, preferably a hang on back (HOB) skimmer. That will save you precious tank space and will look a whole lot better. If you need something quick this will do, but it doesn't work very well and its an eyesore in the tank.

Cascade® Canister Filter Pumps for Aquariums, UL Listed Review

CascadeĀ® Canister Filter Pumps for Aquariums, UL Listed
Average Reviews:

As an fish tank owner for over 15 years, I'd always had the big old Penguin on the back of the tank. Reliable. Sometimes noisy. But it got the job done.
Recently the Penguin gave up the ghost. I decided to upgrade. I could not be happier. I am wondering why I didn't do it sooner. (And so are my fish.)
I'd read several people say it was hard to hook up. I didn't have that experience. The tubes went on with a little muscle, and I guess if you're a 90 pound gal, it might offer some resistance. Another review said he got different tubes instead of the ones that came with the unit. I don't see a need to do that. They're stiff, but more than get the job done. Another note, mine came with the filter media pre-loaded. I had to take the carbon mesh bag out of the plastic it came in. I bought media for it with the "buy this with this" option. Now I have media for when I need it. The priming of the pump was not the "press it four times and it will fill in a minute" the instructions said. However, I just repeated the steps they list, and it was up and running in no time.
That said, I put this on a 55 gallon tank. I have never had cleaner or clearer water in my tank. I just stand and stare at it in happy disbelief. It does seem to have a LOT of muscle for a tank that size, but again, it's doing an awesome job. The fish were a little concerned at first, but by the next morning were doing their thing as always.
I really like the profile of the top of my tank now. My aquarium sits on a stand. The filter went inside and I shut the door. There's no boxy black thing sticking out of the top. It looks great.
Also. This thing is whisper quiet.
What had kept me out of the canister market had been the price. A lot of the guys are $200-300. The price on this one is stellar. Considering I've got over $400 of fish in my tank, worth every penny.
Do I love this filter? Love's a strong word, but as far as inanimate objects go, I got a serious Jones for this one.

Hagen AquaClear Power Head Multifunctional Water Pump 70 Review

Hagen AquaClear Power Head Multifunctional Water Pump 70
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This powerhead is a great thing to have for your aquarium if the tank is between 55-90 gallons. It really packs a punch for its size, and has the capacity to move a lot of water fairly quickly. It can also be used in smaller aquariums too, because the waterflow on this powerhead is ADJUSTABLE (a feature that is rarely seen on other powerheads) - it can filter 300 g.p.h. or adjusted to filter only a trickle. So this can be a used in aquariums under 55 gallons too.
This also has another unique feature - a REVERSE-FLOW option - so the powerhead can also take water from close to the surface and move it through the gravel in the opposite direction. Whichever method of gravel filtration you prefer, this powerhead can accommodate you.
It comes with tubes that provide for the option of additional airation through the spout. So if you have a big aquarium loaded with oxygen hungry fish, these powerheads can provide lots of water surface agitation, water airation with bubbles, or you can just omit the bubbles entirely and stick with undergravel filtration only.
You can also buy attachable power filters to this separately - no need to invest in expensive poewr filters and powerheads separately - just buy this item and the attachable power filters and you're set for a powerhead / power filter in the same unit to clean up and polish your aquarium water. Look for the AQUA CLEAR Large Quick Filter and the Large Quick Filter Cartidges for this purpose.
I've been involved with aquariums for over 16 years, and this is one of the finest accessories for an aquarium I've ever had. If you're considering ornamental fish as a hobby, I heartily recommend this powerhead. It is powerful, quiet, and gives your options of reverse flow and adjustable waterflow.
Be advised on one thing - when the powerhead is operating in reverse flow, small fins like guppies can get stuck to the plastic grid from which water flows into the powerehead - and never escape. So this item is better suited to larger fish when using the reverse flow feature. But it's adjustability enables you to slow the waterflow to a trickle for a powerhead that does not promote too much water turbulation for smaller fish.

Hagen Air Curtain Air Diffuser 47 inch Long Review

Hagen Air Curtain Air Diffuser 47 inch Long
Average Reviews:

This air curtain works fairly well, however make sure you note that the line is baby blue. This was something I did not really factor in as my rocks are black.
Also the line itself floats, it has not weight itself. So all of the 9 or so weights are required to keep the line down. This would be okay except that the weights are almost 2 inches thick and next to impossible to hide in your aquarium rocks. So while the bubble wall works well its virtually impossible to hide.

Fluval Edge Aquarium Black Review

Fluval Edge Aquarium Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've had my Fluval Edge tank for almost 10 months now. I've owned a 29 gal and 10 gal tank before so I've had decent experience with freshwater tanks (not saltwater). I recently moved and wanted to get a small fish tank (4 gal at most) to add to my room, but my boyfriend talked me into getting the Fluval Edge because I could actually have a decent aquarium. We both liked the modern look of the tank too. I have 2 real wood logs, 2 live plants, 3 glolite tetras, 3 full-grown ghost shrimp (about 3" in length), 2 small suckerfish (they're almost smaller than the ghost shrimp), and about 2" in gravel bottom.
Now that it's been almost 10 months, I still love my tank and think every penny I spent on it was worth it. There are some funny quirks that serious aquarist would rather skip, but none of the quirks have deterred me from my love of the tank.
Pros:
-I love the modern look. I like how my cords and pump are all hidden and out of view. I hate buying those fake aquarium backings to hide everything.
-I like the 360 view. I like being able to look into my tank from the top and clearly see through to the bottom. It helps to keep track of my fish too.
-I like how it's a sturdy glass. Hagen didn't cheap on the glass construction. When you pick it up (it's a little heavy), you know you have a quality glass tank.
-Halogen lights give off a nice heat that actually helps heat the tank. I live in a place that has an average yearly temperature of about 67. So the extra heat from the lights help keep my tank warm.
-Halogen lights make my fish/plants look fine. I've had no "bleaching" issues with the lights. The fish retain their color just fine and I know what they look like when they are bleached (my fish were PALE when I moved).
-Filtration system works like a charm. I can stir up the bottom organic material to get it pretty turbid, but the pump/filters can clear it up in about 15 minutes. I change my filters regularly as is suggested, but you could probably go longer as long as you rinsed them every once in a while.
-I've had no problems with the tank that warrant any complaints. The minor quirks is as bad as it's gotten for me. Cons/Quirks:
-The Fluval Edge heater (bought separately) only heats the water to about 2 degrees above the ambient temperature. This would be fine if I lived somewhere warm, but I live along the central coast of California and we're lucky if the weather gets hotter than 70 degrees. So sometimes my water gets down to 72 degrees even with the heater on or won't trigger quickly enough because the ambient temperature is within range. Get a different heater.
-The pump seems to be a little strong for my fish. My fish and shrimp swim fine in the tank, but since there's a small opening for food placement, tetras have to catch the food quickly or it gets pushed to the bottom before they can get to it. Not a big issue because the shrimp eat the excess food, I watch my fish to make sure they're eating enough, and I put flakes in at the corner furthest away from the inflow of water to keep the food on the surface longer, but it's still a little annoying. My fish do like to swim underneath the inflow of water and "play" in it, though. Anyway, delicate fish might not be ideal with the pump.
-Halogen lights don't disperse enough light to allow for flowering plants. Not a big issue again because I just replaced my more delicate plant (thinner leaves and flowered) with a plant with broader leaves and the plants are doing great. They're getting really big and my shrimp and suckerfish love the "levels" they can hide on.
-Lights do grow a green algae that can get pretty tough if left sitting long enough. If you've got a good suckerfish, shouldn't be a problem. Mine are pretty whimpy and did well the first few weeks I got them and now are kind of lazy.
-Hard to clean. Not a big issue again, but I bought a magnetic algae cleaner (non-Hagen brand), hand scrubber, and scrubber with handle. The scrubber with the handle works great, but can only be used for the back of the tank. Because of the opening, the handle gets in the way of allowing you to get the top, front of the tank. So the magnetic algae cleaner (really quite great) gets to the areas I can't or I just use the scrubber without the handle. I actually recommend the magnetic algae cleaners. The one I have makes life really easy.
-Had to buy the Fluval Edge fish net. Do NOT buy a NORMAL fish net with this tank! It will be worthless, stress your fish out, and make you want to do something bad to your tank, fish, or net. My boyfriend and I spent easily 1.5 hours trying to catch my fish/shrimp when I was moving and it was a huge frustration. The only way we got the shrimp finally (even with only a quarter of water left) was we put a plastic bag into the tank and herded the shrimp and fish into it. The Fluval Edge fish net, though, is a triangle shape and allows you to get into the corner of the tank with the opening. It's not perfect, but makes life a WHOLE lot easier. Definitely worth the buy to lower your fish and your stress level.
-Small concern about the glass tank hanging over the base. I live in California where there are earthquakes. It'd have to be an earthquake of the century for it to shake the tank off the base (it's kind of "hooked on" by the lid/pump to the base) thanks to how heavy it is with the water and glass tank, but it does kind of run through my head. It has survived perfectly fine through a few high 3's and a low 4, though.
As I said, the cons aren't really cons, but more quirks. You have to be willing to put up with the small quirks, but it hasn't affected anything for me.
A few comments on other reviews:
-I agree that if you had dual breathing fish this tank wouldn't be the best for you.
-My halogen lights have had no problems whatsoever. I haven't had to replace them or clean them. They look a little dirty, but nothing bad enough that requires me to clean them. They do heat up the metal grating at the top of the lid, but not enough to burn me, melt the cover, or allow for rusting to occur (I suspect the rusting occurred because it was a saltwater tank and less because of the lights). It's kind of a nice warmth you can rest your hand on and it's fine. Plus, as I said earlier, the heat helps heat my tank. The sockets of the lights have been fine too.
-The halogen lights wouldn't be ideal for jumping fish. I wouldn't be surprised if the fish got hurt if they jumped at a light.
-The button at the top and the cover, for me, have also been fine. The button turns and you can remove the cover if you want, but I leave mine on for added protection. No issues there.
-Bottom intake water pipe-thing is pretty open for anyone who wants to breed fish/shrimp and/or have smaller fish. I'd buy the extra thing to put over it to make sure your fish don't get sucked up into the filter. For me, I don't need it, but it would be needed for smaller fish (as in anything baby size).
Anyway, when it's all said and done...if you want a nice looking tank and don't mind putting in heartier fish/shrimp/plants into your tank, this tank will work just fine for you. The quirks I've had with it are manageable and don't require that much extra work, money, or time. If you don't want to mess with the fuss and the look doesn't grab you, don't buy it. If you like the look as I do and don't mind the quirks, I'd say go for it. I'd recommend the tank to anyone based off of my current review. The quirks aren't bad enough for me to not recommend it and the pros outweigh the quirks. I only give it a 4/5 because of the quirks. It's not perfect so shouldn't deserve a perfect rating.======== UPDATE ==========
12/16/10 - It has been almost 11 months to the day I bought my Fluval Edge and ONE of the halogen lights finally died on me. Easy replacement (pull out the old one, put in the new one). I'm wondering when the 2nd one will die now.
I also mentioned in my review not to buy a normal fish net. I'm going to suggest to buy both. Buy a small regular rectangle net and buy the Fluval Edge net. At minimum, just do the Fluval Edge net and forget the regular one. I find, for whatever reason, I use the regular fish net for day-to-day things (smoothing gravel, moving things, catching the easy fish, etc) and will use the Fluval Edge one more for removing air bubbles and catching my hard-to-catch fish and shrimp.
One thing I did not mention earlier is a trick to remove air bubbles if your tank isn't level: Use your Fluval Edge net and simply shove it near the air bubbles at the top and "move" or "pull" the air bubbles out to the opening. Takes a few back-and-forth motions, but gets them out EVERY time with no other fuss. My tank is always 100% full without air bubbles. It always impresses people when they see the tank is 100% full too.

Hydor Deco Geyser Kit Large - Blue (Ornament + Ario 4 Blue) Review

Hydor Deco Geyser Kit Large - Blue (Ornament + Ario 4 Blue)
Average Reviews:

The LED and the air jet work great and look great. However the Geyser decoration that goes over it doesn't even fit. I spent hours trying to get it to work, but the bottom line is that the the LED and air jet housing is too big for the geyser decoration provided. Waste of money, all I feel I paid for is the LED and air jet, and for just that part being in my tank $60 is ridiculous.

Hydor ARIO 4 UL Aquarium Aerator 20-50 gph Venturi Internal Air Pump Review

If you check around this is a discontinued item.I bought three on clearance for cheap on the web, I paid $12ea. Just arrived yesterday. I think it is a great idea. But the amount of air bubbles was not near enough for my needs. The deeper the water the worse it will get even with the regulator removed for MAX air. ARIO 4 clams to go as deep as 14", But the siphoning technic will suffer at this depth. I am also so curious about the heat it will generated, which could be a plus for tropical fish i guess if it doesn't over heat like a waterfall-pump when its not cleaned regularly. I found it difficult to hide and hold down and very noisy if touching surfaces as the other review mentioned. I would not buy these again. Will stick to a good old pump and stones.

Acrylic Wall Mount Fish Bowl Review

First of all, bettas JUMP. I don't see good outcomes. My female jumps ALL the time. My males are nutorious for jumping at the wrong times (ex: While I'm changing their tank)
The size is WAY too small for even bettas. The bare minimum for bettas is a gallon and even then if you can upgrade please do!
I would invest in at least a gallon size tank. Please don't be cruel! Look around the internet for REAL instructions on how to take care of your betta. Your betta well thank you for it!!!

Big Co2 bubbles coming out from the side of the disc. I tried to fix it by using waterproof glue but it doesnt solve the problem.
I used it for just 2 days and paid around $24. A waste of money. I went back using a glass diffuser for $9 and works better.
Not worth even for just 1 STAR Rating. Dont buy it.

Hydor ARIO 4 MOONLIGHT LED Aquarium Aerator UL White Bubbles Review

I went with this product because it claimed to be quite but this is not the case it makes a vibrating noise and the foam filter that sits inside the unit under the light needs to be cleaned a lot. Rocks get stuck in the fan and slows down the bubbles and starts to make a loud noise ( so you need to put your hand in the tank again). The other thing is that you cannot shut off the lights so if you don't want to drive you fish crazy you need to put plants around it to dim the light in the tank.

NutraFin CO2 Natural Plant System Review

NutraFin CO2 Natural Plant System
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you plan on having plants in your aquarium then injecting CO2 into your tank is highly recommended. Having a yeast-based CO2 system for me is the easiest, cheapest and safest way to go (as opposed to a canister-based system). When using a yeast-based system, like this Hagen one, it's impossible to overdose CO2 in your tank which is nice.
Remember, having 2-4 watts of "quality" fluorescent lighting per gallon (compact fluorescent fixtures seems to me to be the best choice) in your aquarium is even more important than adding CO2.
This off the shelf system should be sufficient for beginning aquarists who are starting out with plants (fish don't need extra CO2). While not as efficient or cheap as a DIY one, it does a decent job of putting a fair amount of CO2 in the tank for about 2 week periods at a time. People who also don't want to mix their own yeast mixture will find the packets more convenient (however less effective).
The Hagen diffuser (that dissolves the CO2 bubbles into the water) does a decent job. However, there is waste, meaning, CO2 bubbles escape to the surface before being dissolved. But you still will get a raise in the tank's CO2 level.
So, if you are new to CO2 systems and want something that is minimal investment ($35) and don't want to make your own system, then this is a no brainer system. I think you should get it and help your plants to thrive.
But if you want a cheaper, much more effective system, then do this: For 10-25 gallon tank, use one 2 liter soda bottle. For 25-50, use 2. Mix 1/2 teaspoon of bakers yeast in warm water and then let it sit for 5-10 min. Then dissolve 2 cups of sugar into filtered water and pour into soda bottle. Add the yeast. Drill a hole in the soda bottle cap and either glue an air line to run through it or buy a metal airline connector (like from Lowes or Home Depot) and glue it (using Goop) into the cap. After you have the air line running out from the soda bottle (if you have two then connect them using a T brass connector), run it into your aquarium and dissolve the CO2 using a diffuser (like this Hagen one, howbeit not efficient), an air stone (also not efficient) or into a small pop bottle that a Rio Power Head is forcing water into to completely dissolve the CO2 bubbles. You can search around and find photos on how this is done.
After all of my trial and errors, the above method using soda bottles with a metal airline connector in the cap (glued in with goop) and a Rio Power head is the best, cheapest and most effective system for pumping CO2 into your tank.
If you are purchasing this Hagen system, just remember that for every 20 gallons of water you have in your aquarium, you need to set up another Hagen canister. So for a 40 gallon tank, buy 2 of these. But remember, you will get a nice rise in CO2 levels but not near the level you would using a forced water reactor using a Power head. There are two parts to a CO2 system: the amount and quality of CO2 bubbles being produced and then also the amount those CO2 bubbles are being diffused into the aquarium water. The best is having the bubbles completely disappear into the water. Then you know there is no waste to your CO2 production.
To find out how much CO2 is effectively being dissolved into your tank, search online for the CO2 measurement calculator. This is measured by the ratio of KH and PH in your tank (as long as you haven't used PH buffers).
Hope this helps you in making a valued purchase.
